Palm Coast, Florida

Palm Coast is a Florida city that is located in Flagler County. This city covers an area of fifty-one square miles and has a population of sixty-eight thousand residents. Fifty square miles of it is land and a little under a mile of it is water. The area around Palm has not had a hurricane make landfall for the past sixty year. This is due to its location on the eastern seaboard and prevailing ocean currents that act as a shield against potential hurricane strikes. The county of Flagler has had one of the highest rates of population growth in the U.S. for the past twenty years. Palm Coast was founded by the ITT Community Development Corporation in 1969. The original plan integrated forty-eight thousand homes on forty-two thousand acres. All the streets were paved and a central system of potable water and sewage disposal served all the individual lots in the plan. Six years later, Flagler County established the Palm Coast Service District. Under it, the city was given access to animal control, and fire and emergency services. In 1999, Palm Coast was incorporated as a city. Its local government consist of a five person city council and a mayor.

The city has several different types of activities that make it a fun place to visit. Guests to Palm Coast may choose to take a boat ride around the extensive system of intracoastal waterways and canals. Or visitors may choose to spend a nice day relaxing and picnicing in one of the city’s parks. But, the city has more then just watersports and park activities. Visitors can also try a nice game of golf or tennis. And of course, there is always shopping at the Palm Harbor Shopping Center or at one of the city’s many strip malls. About a half hour outside the town is the Alligator Farm Zoological Park. This park was founded in 1893 and is one of the oldest zoos in the state of Florida. In 1992, it was listed as a National Historic Monument. Alligator Farm Zoological Park is located on twelve thousand square feet of land and has a multitude of animals in its collection. These include South American Red-Footed Tortoise, Bornean Crested Fireback Pheasants, Clownfish, Tentacle Anemone, Reticulated Pythons, Yellow Spotted Amazon River Turtles, alligators, crocodiles and yellow monitors. Another attraction that is just a short drive from the city is the Ocean Center. The Ocean Center is a convention center and arena that is located about a half hour away from Palm Coast in the city of Daytona Beach. It was founded in 1985 and has recently been expanded. It has over two hundred thousand square feet of meeting space, forty-two thousand feet of exhibit space, twelve thousand feet of ballroom space and thirty-two thousand square feet of meeting rooms. With the newly added Exhibit hall, an additional ninety-five hundred feet of space was added. The Ocean Center’s arena has enough space to seat sixty-one hundred people for ice hockey games, eight thousand for basketball games, seven thousand for ice shows and the circus, and nine thousand for concerts.

Tourists can easily jump from the city of Palm Coast to the quaint village of Mount Dora. Mount Dora is a small town of eleven thousand residents in Lake County. This Florida town was settled in 1874 by David Simpson. Six years later, the post office had the name of the town listed as Royellou. Three years after that the Alexander House was opened. Alexander House is a two story hotel that has ten rooms. The town was then renamed Mount Dora, after Lake Dora. The town is now known for its crafts and antique shops. Located within the town is the Old Mount Dora Railroad Station. This railroad station was built in 1915 and was in service until the 1950s. In 1992, it was placed on the United States National Register of Historic Places. Other historic places here are John P. Donnelly House and Lakeside Inn. There is also a couple of museums which include The Antique Boat Museum and the Royellou Museum. Every year the town hosts a number of events which include The Mount Dora Ghost Walk, the Antique Boat Show and the Mount Dora Art Festival.

These restaurants include Perkins Restaurant & Bakery, Ai Japanese Restaurant, Barbara Jeans Restaurant, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, High Jackers Restaurant, Thai By Thai Restaurant and Red Sphere Sushi Restaurant and Sake Lounge. The city is also home to a number of bed & breakfasts, inns, motels and hotels.
